Morocco’s digital payments ecosystem is set to offer consumers another way to pay, as Samsung Pay launches in the country with support from Mastercard. Powered by Mastercard’s tokenization technology, the service allows eligible Mastercard cardholders at participating banks to make payments using compatible Samsung devices.

The launch builds on Mastercard’s partnerships with financial institutions and technology providers to expand digital payment services across Morocco. By adding Samsung Pay, the company aims to give consumers more payment options and make digital transactions a part of everyday shopping.

Tokenization adds payment protection

Samsung Pay uses Mastercard’s existing tokenization capabilities in Morocco. This technology replaces sensitive card details with a unique digital token, helping protect payment information during transactions. Authentication and risk-based security measures provide additional protection.

The launch also supports Mastercard’s global goal of tokenizing 100% of online transactions by 2030. The company continues to work with banks and technology partners to make digital payments more secure and easier to use.

“At Mastercard, we believe the future of payments should give people more choice, greater convenience and confidence in every transaction. Supporting Samsung Pay in Morocco is another important step in expanding access to secure digital payment experiences, underpinned by our tokenization technology: Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES). Beyond introducing another way to pay, our ambition is to make digital payments faster, simpler, and more secure.”

– Mohamed Benomar, Country Manager of North West Africa, Mastercard

More payment options for consumers and merchants

Samsung Pay enables consumers to pay using compatible Samsung smartphones or smartwatches, without needing a physical card for supported transactions. Participating banks can offer this digital payment option to eligible cardholders, while merchants that accept supported contactless payments can accommodate Samsung Pay transactions.

“With Samsung Pay, we want making a payment to feel as natural as using your smartphone or smartwatch. This launch marks another step in our commitment to providing Galaxy users with innovations that are simple, secure, and genuinely useful in everyday life. We would like to thank participating banks and Mastercard for their trust and collaboration, and we are proud to contribute to this digital transformation.”

– Hongseok Lee, President, Samsung Electronics Maghreb Arab

Mastercard and Samsung will also launch a joint campaign in Morocco to encourage everyday use of Samsung Pay. The initiative will combine promotional activities with consumer education on making simple and secure payments through compatible Samsung devices. It aims to support the long-term growth of digital payments across the country.
