As technology companies reassess the cost of adopting artificial intelligence, Apple is tightening employee spending limits on AI tools. The move comes even as the company continues to expand AI use across its operations, according to a report citing people familiar with the matter.
Apple reduced the daily AI spending allowance for some engineers from $300 to $200 last month. The company is also considering further cuts for certain engineering teams, which could bring their daily limits down to $100.
Some non-engineering teams already have a daily cap of $100. This could be reduced further to as little as $25, the report added.
Employees who need higher access to AI tools may request exemptions from senior executives.
AI usage costs under review
The budgets cover AI “tokens”, which measure the units of data processed by models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini.
Apple’s decision reflects a wider shift across the technology industry, as companies review AI-related expenses after initially encouraging employees to adopt these tools more widely.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The move follows similar cost-control measures at other companies. A recent report said Goldman Sachs had restricted access to certain AI coding tools after reviewing their productivity benefits and potential risks.
