Hidden iOS 27 beta references point toward Apple's foldable iPhone ambitions

Fresh discoveries within Apple’s first iOS 27 developer beta have sparked speculation about the company’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone. The findings surfaced shortly after Apple unveiled iOS 27 and its other software updates during WWDC 2026, where the company introduced new features currently available in beta testing ahead of a wider rollout later this year.

According to reports, hidden files found in the first iOS 27 developer beta contain references that appear to point toward a foldable device. The code reportedly includes terms such as “foldState”, along with references to “mechanicalAngleDegrees” and “angleDegrees”. These elements are believed to help the operating system detect how far a device is opened around its hinge.

The beta software is also said to contain references within an updated Apple service utility designed for display repairs. Reports suggest it mentions a secondary display, an additional glass cover, and 2 light sensors, further fueling speculation about a foldable iPhone.

Several new features introduced in iOS 27 and macOS 27 are also being viewed as potential indicators of a larger-screen foldable device. Apple has reportedly added the ability to resize select native app widgets, including Music, News, and Weather, into a full-screen format on iPhones. Such functionality could be particularly useful on a foldable device with a larger display area.

In macOS 27, Apple is reportedly introducing an enhanced iPhone Mirroring feature that allows users to resize the mirrored iPhone window into a wider, tablet-like layout. Reports suggest this could play an important role in supporting the foldable iPhone experience.

Another notable addition is the new App Adaptability concept, which enables developers to create applications that can adjust to different screen sizes and aspect ratios. This move is seen as preparation for future Apple devices with wider and more flexible displays.

While Apple has not officially confirmed a foldable iPhone, the references discovered in iOS 27 beta suggest the company may be laying the software foundation for a new category of devices expected to arrive in the future.
