Apple has announced a major audio upgrade for AirPods users with the introduction of custom equaliser (EQ) controls in iOS 27. The feature was unveiled during WWDC 2026 as part of a broader set of software updates across the Apple ecosystem.

The new custom EQ feature will allow AirPods users to personalize their listening experience by adjusting audio settings directly through system controls. This marks a significant change for AirPods, which have traditionally offered limited sound customization options through accessibility features and preset music settings.

According to Apple, the feature will become available later this year with the release of iOS 27. Developer testing has already begun, while a public beta version is scheduled to roll out next month ahead of the official launch.

During the event, Apple showcased an EQ interface that allows users to adjust different audio frequency ranges. The preview also featured a visual graph that updates in real time as sound settings are modified, giving users a clearer view of their audio adjustments.

The addition addresses a long-standing request from AirPods users seeking greater control over sound output. Until now, audio customization was largely limited to Headphone Accommodations and preset EQ settings available through Apple Music.

Based on the demonstration, Apple appears to be focusing on simple and user-friendly sound controls rather than advanced frequency editing found in some third-party audio applications. The company has not yet confirmed whether users will be able to save multiple custom sound profiles.

The feature is expected to help listeners fine-tune audio preferences, including enhancing bass, vocals, or other elements of the sound experience. It will join existing AirPods features such as Adaptive Audio, Personalised Spatial Audio, and Conversation Awareness on supported models.

Apple has not disclosed whether the custom EQ functionality will support third-party Bluetooth headphones and earbuds. More details are expected to emerge as developers and beta testers gain access to the software.

The custom EQ feature was announced alongside several other WWDC 2026 updates, including enhancements to Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, parental controls, Screen Time, and interface customization tools.
