Global commercial payments provider Convera has appointed Jon Southall as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, bringing experience in large-scale payment platforms as the company advances its international payments services.
Southall joins Convera after 5 years at PayPal, where he managed the Large Enterprise Platform, which supports more than US$1.5 trillion in annual transaction volume. His previous experience includes building and scaling payment platforms at Boku and Braintree.
In his new role, Southall will help deliver Convera’s technology roadmap, focusing on faster, more reliable and more transparent international money transfers for businesses.
Formerly known as Western Union Business Solutions, Convera was sold by Western Union to Goldfinch Partners and The Baupost Group for around US$910 million.
Focus on integrated cross-border payments
Convera aims to bring cross-border payments, foreign exchange (FX) risk management and multi-currency services together. Its strategy allows businesses to send, receive and hold money in the currencies they use, manage FX risk when making payments, and route transactions based on speed, cost and visibility.
The appointment comes as businesses face growing challenges in managing currency exposure, tracking funds and navigating different payment networks.
Convera announces 3 other leadership changes
Southall’s appointment is 1 of 4 senior leadership changes announced as Convera continues investing in technology, product delivery and commercial capabilities. The other appointments are Mike Cahill as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Tui Allen as Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer, and Chris Steinig as Chief Information Officer.
“This team brings complementary strengths across product, technology and operations, backed by experience delivering at global scale,” said Cahill. He added that the company would focus on turning customer needs into products, modernising technology and improving service across markets.
Group CEO Patrick Gauthier said businesses need more than faster or cheaper payments. They also need visibility into where their money is, its value and how to protect it during transfers.
He said Convera’s global reach, FX expertise, regulatory experience and customer relationships position it to address these needs. Gauthier added that Cahill, Southall, Allen and Steinig bring the leadership experience needed to advance the company’s plans for integrated cross-border payments.
