Google is expanding Gemini’s capabilities to make document creation and studying easier, allowing users to generate, preview and edit files without leaving a conversation. The update also brings free textbook resources to Gemini Notebook, giving students more ways to access learning materials.
Gemini adds in-chat file editing
Google said the new tools support documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and other file types. Users can open generated files in a full-screen view, make edits directly, highlight specific sections to ask questions, and request changes to text and visuals within the same chat.
PDF preview and editing are available on the web and mobile versions of Gemini. Support for other formats, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT files and code, is currently limited to the web.
The feature can also help students organise their study materials. For example, users can upload handwritten lecture notes and ask Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide. They can then edit the document, highlight sections for clarification or ask the AI assistant to revise specific text and visuals.
The new file creation and editing features are available to all users in every language supported by the Gemini app.
Gemini Notebook adds free textbooks
Separately, Google is expanding its Expert Intelligence initiative, introduced last month to help users access trusted sources through its AI products.
The latest update brings hundreds of textbooks from providers in the US and India to Gemini Notebook at no cost. Sources include OpenStax, Open Textbook Library and S Chand Publishing.
Students can add textbooks to their notebooks and receive answers based directly on the selected material. The feature also provides inline citations and links to original sources.
Gemini Notebook can turn textbook content into study guides, practice quizzes, flashcards and other learning resources tailored to students’ needs.
To browse the catalogue, users can open a notebook in Gemini, select Add sources, and then choose Textbooks.
