YouTube is preparing to roll out its AI-powered Likeness Detection tool to all eligible adult creators on the platform, expanding access to technology designed to identify deepfake videos using a creator’s visual identity.
The company first announced the feature in 2024 and initially introduced it to a limited group of creators through the YouTube Partner Programme. In March this year, access was expanded to government officials and journalists. YouTube has now confirmed that the tool will soon become available to all eligible creators above the age of 18.
According to the company, the rollout will begin over the coming weeks.
Creators who receive access can activate the feature through YouTube Studio on desktop devices. Under the “Content detection” section, users can open the “Likeness” tab and select “Start now” to begin the setup process.
The activation process requires creators to give YouTube permission to use the likeness detection technology and complete a one-time facial verification process.
Once enabled, the AI system will automatically scan videos uploaded on YouTube to identify synthetically generated visual likenesses of creators. If no videos appear in the detection panel, YouTube said it could simply mean that no deepfake content involving the creator has been uploaded to the platform.
The company also clarified that the tool currently only detects visual deepfakes and cannot identify AI-generated voice clones used without permission.
In its support page, YouTube described Likeness Detection as an “industry-first tool” designed to help creators monitor and manage how artificial intelligence is used to represent them online.
The company stated, “Our goal is to provide you with more peace of mind by giving you easy access to request the removal of unauthorised content that violates our Privacy Guidelines.”
