OPPO explores India manufacturing joint venture with Amber Group and Bhagwati Products

Chinese smartphone company OPPO is reportedly in discussions with Indian electronics manufacturers Amber Group and Bhagwati Products to establish a manufacturing joint venture in India as part of a wider restructuring strategy.

According to a report, the talks have been ongoing for some time as OPPO looks to strengthen the localisation of its India operations by the end of this year.

The restructuring is expected to further integrate OPPO’s India business with its sub-brands OnePlus and Realme while separating manufacturing operations from distribution, sales, and backend functions.

Sources cited in the report said the company is aiming to shift toward a more locally focused manufacturing structure amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and the Indian government’s push for greater localisation in the electronics sector.

Both Amber Group and Bhagwati Products are currently in discussions with OPPO regarding the proposed joint venture.

The report stated that a partnership with Bhagwati Products could be more practical because of its existing collaboration with Huaqin, a Chinese original device manufacturer that designs smartphones for OPPO and Vivo.

Bhagwati Products has already leased a large section of OPPO’s Greater Noida factory along with parts of its operational infrastructure. The arrangement is reportedly similar to the company’s earlier expansion at Vivo’s Greater Noida facility.

The Bhagwati-Huaqin joint venture is currently manufacturing OPPO smartphones from both the Vivo factory and a section of OPPO’s Greater Noida plant.

According to the report, OPPO has been searching for an Indian manufacturing partner since 2024 after the Indian government encouraged Chinese electronics and smartphone companies to involve local partners in manufacturing operations.

The move also comes during a period of tighter regulatory oversight of Chinese smartphone companies over alleged issues related to customs duty evasion, income tax violations, and money laundering investigations.
