US public grows wary of AI as gap widens between experts and everyday users

A widening gap is emerging in how artificial intelligence is perceived across the United States, with public concern increasing even as experts remain largely optimistic.

A new annual report from a leading university highlights that anxiety around AI is rising sharply, especially among younger people. Concerns are focused on real-world issues such as job security, healthcare costs, energy expenses, and doubts about whether governments can effectively regulate the technology.

Recent survey data shows that Gen Z is becoming more frustrated and less hopeful about AI, despite nearly 50% of them using it daily or weekly. Experts suggest this reaction is linked to the direct impact AI could have on young people entering the workforce, particularly in terms of job disruption.

The report also reveals a significant disconnect between experts and the general public. About 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive impact on the US over the next 20 years. In contrast, only 10% of the public say they feel more excited than concerned about AI.

This gap becomes more visible across key sectors. In healthcare, 84% of experts expect positive outcomes from AI, while only 44% of the public agree. When it comes to jobs, 73% of experts express optimism, compared to just 23% of the general population. Similarly, 69% of experts are positive about AI’s impact on the economy, while only 21% of the public share that view.

At the same time, around 64% of Americans believe AI will result in fewer jobs over the next 20 years, a concern that many industry leaders consider exaggerated.

The findings point to a growing divide in perception, where experts and everyday users appear to be experiencing AI in very different ways.
