Anthropic regains limited approval to deploy Mythos 5 AI model

A major development in the AI industry has emerged after the US government approved broader access to Anthropic’s advanced Mythos 5 AI model, easing restrictions that had been imposed over national security concerns.

The approval follows discussions between Anthropic and the Trump administration after the government earlier restricted access to Mythos 5 and the related Fable 5 model over concerns that their security safeguards could be bypassed. The move had forced Anthropic to suspend global access to both models while working toward a resolution.

The US Commerce Department confirmed that Anthropic had addressed risks linked to the advanced AI models, allowing Mythos 5 to be made available again to a limited group of trusted partners. Anthropic said it is now working to restore access for approved cybersecurity organisations and critical infrastructure providers as quickly as possible.

However, restrictions on Fable 5 remain in place. The government has not yet approved broader deployment of the model, indicating that officials continue to assess potential security risks associated with its wider release.

Earlier this month, Fable 5 became Anthropic’s first publicly available Mythos-class model with built-in safeguards, while Mythos 5 was designed for a select group of cybersecurity institutions under the company’s Project Glasswing initiative. The programme already includes around 200 organisations, including major technology companies and research institutions.

The decision marks one of the most significant examples of direct US government oversight of advanced AI systems. It also highlights the growing focus on balancing AI innovation with national security, as regulators continue to develop safeguards for frontier AI models before allowing wider deployment.
