Windows 10 users have received more time to keep their devices secure, as Microsoft has extended its Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme by another year for eligible users.

The company has quietly updated its support policy, allowing enrolled Windows 10 users to continue receiving critical security updates until October 12, 2027, instead of the previously announced October 2026 deadline. The move gives users additional time before they need to migrate to Windows 11 or replace older hardware.

The extension applies to devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in the Home, Professional, Pro Education, and Workstations editions. Existing users enrolled in the Consumer ESU programme will automatically continue receiving security updates through the new deadline without needing to re-enrol.

The ESU programme provides only critical security patches and does not include new features, performance improvements, or technical support. Microsoft continues to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11 where possible, while offering the extended programme as a temporary solution for devices that cannot yet be upgraded.

Eligible users can enrol in the programme using a Microsoft account. Microsoft has also retained alternative enrolment options, including redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or paying a $30 one-time fee in supported regions.

The extension comes as millions of PCs worldwide continue to run Windows 10. By extending security coverage, Microsoft aims to reduce security risks for users who are not yet ready to transition to Windows 11 while maintaining protection against newly discovered vulnerabilities.
