Unitree G1 humanoid robot demonstrates hybrid mobility with skating, spins and flips

Pushing the boundaries of robotics innovation, Unitree Robotics has unveiled a new demo of its G1 humanoid robot, highlighting remarkable advancements in mobility and balance.

In the video released on April 23, the G1 robot is seen gliding on roller skates and ice skates, performing one-leg spins, 360-degree turns, and even front flips—while maintaining stability throughout.

The company shared its broader vision, stating, “Humanoid robots are the ideal form of general-purpose robots (perfect for general AI and human-derived data). They can work without wheels — but they can also have wheels if they want. Whatever works.”

What sets the G1 apart is its hybrid design. Unlike traditional humanoid robots that rely only on legs, the G1 can switch between walking and rolling based on the environment. This combination allows it to move efficiently on smooth surfaces while still handling uneven terrain when needed.

The demo clearly shows this flexibility, with the robot seamlessly transitioning between movement styles and executing complex actions without losing balance.

Experts suggest that this hybrid approach could address a long-standing challenge in robotics—balancing efficiency with adaptability. While wheels offer speed and energy efficiency, legs provide better navigation on complex surfaces. The G1 integrates both capabilities into a single system.

The development reflects rapid progress in humanoid robotics, where systems are becoming more dynamic, efficient, and capable of handling real-world environments.
