Telangana cybercrime losses fall as authorities freeze more fraud funds

Telangana recorded a reduction in financial losses from cybercrime during the first 9 months of 2026, while authorities managed to freeze a larger share of money linked to fraud. According to the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB), reported losses fell by 20.2% between January and September compared with the same period in 2025.

The losses declined from Rs 1,104.42 crore in January-September 2025 to Rs 881.72 crore in the corresponding period this year, a reduction of Rs 222.70 crore.

At the same time, funds placed on lien in bank accounts linked to fraudsters increased by 42.2%. The amount rose from Rs 183.11 crore to Rs 260.30 crore.

Cyber awareness campaign reaches over 2.7 lakh people

The TGCSB shared the figures as it wrapped up its month-long Cyber Security Awareness Month campaign. The initiative concluded with night flash walks across all police units on October 30 and 31.

The bureau attributed the decline in losses and increase in frozen funds to continued public awareness, faster reporting of cyber fraud and coordinated action to restrict access to suspected fraudulent money.

During October, the TGCSB and police units organised 4,248 awareness programmes, reaching 2,78,428 people across Telangana. Since January 2026, a total of 24,886 programmes have been conducted, covering 13,74,119 citizens.

Launched on October 1, the campaign included awareness activities at educational institutions, public spaces and community gatherings. The bureau said its outreach efforts are being adapted to the changing methods used by cybercriminals and the groups they target.

Initiatives such as ‘Online but Unafraid’, ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga’ and ‘Pause. Think. Verify.’ under the ‘Fraud ka Fullstop’ campaign will continue as part of the bureau’s public awareness efforts.
