Kanpur digital arrest fraud: Bihar man held over ₹48 lakh transferred by doctor

A cybercrime investigation in Kanpur has led to the arrest of a man from Bihar who allegedly received around ₹48 lakh in a digital arrest fraud targeting a senior doctor. The accused, identified as Rajiv Ranjan from Salkhua in Bihar’s Saharsa district, reportedly received the money in his bank account.

Police recovered a mobile phone from him and are investigating his links with other suspects and bank accounts allegedly used to transfer the fraud proceeds.

How was the doctor targeted?

The complainant, Yogesh Chandra Mishra, a resident of Kanpur’s Swaroop Nagar area, was allegedly contacted by individuals posing as senior officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The callers claimed that he was involved in a serious criminal investigation related to financial irregularities. They allegedly threatened him with arrest and legal action against him and his family. The doctor was also instructed not to contact anyone or inform the police.

Under pressure from these threats, Mishra reportedly transferred around ₹48 lakh to bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.

How did police identify the Bihar suspect?

During the investigation, police traced the financial transactions and identified a bank account allegedly linked to Rajiv Ranjan. The account provided important leads about the movement of the stolen money.

His arrest brings the total number of arrests in the case to 4, including 3 individuals who had been taken into custody earlier.

What did the financial investigation reveal?

Police are examining bank statements, mobile phones and transaction records to identify further links and money transfers.

Investigators also found 4 cybercrime complaints associated with the accounts on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, involving an estimated ₹1,42,68,000.

Police further allege that a company named Baukoyo Contractors Pvt Ltd was established using forged identification documents. Around ₹25.98 lakh was deposited into its bank account through 15 transactions and later moved through 611 transactions.

Who are the other accused?

Earlier, police arrested Vasu, Atish Kumar and Kanchan Prajapati in connection with the case. Another suspect, Mukul Chaubey from Kanpur Nagar, has been declared wanted.

Authorities are investigating whether other individuals helped create bank accounts, receive funds or transfer money to hide its origin.

What happens next?

The case was registered at Kanpur Nagar’s cybercrime police station under Sections 318(4), 338 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act.

Police are continuing to examine the financial trail and identify other people allegedly involved in the fraud. The case highlights how cybercriminals impersonate law enforcement officials and use threats of arrest to manipulate victims into transferring large sums of money.
