Marking a major step in sustainable transport, Siemens Mobility will deliver Romania’s first hydrogen-powered train fleet as part of a contract with the Railway Reform Authority (ARF).
The agreement includes the supply of 12 two-car hydrogen-powered electric multiple units based on the Mireo Plus H platform. This is Romania’s first hydrogen train project and among the earliest in Eastern Europe, aimed at reducing emissions and modernizing regional rail services.
“We are proud to deliver the first fleet of hydrogen trains for Romania. With the Mireo Plus H, we combine a proven regional train platform with state-of-the-art hydrogen technology, enabling zero-emission rail operations on non-electrified lines,” said Andre Rodenbeck.
“Hydrogen will play a key role in achieving climate-neutral mobility in Europe, and this project clearly demonstrates how innovation can be translated into reliable and economically attractive rail solutions.”
The trains are scheduled to enter passenger service in 2029. Each unit will have a maximum speed of 120 km/h and offer 131 fixed seats along with 5 folding seats. The trainsets can operate in multiple traction with up to 2 coupled units, ensuring flexibility for varying passenger demand.
They will be equipped with PZB train protection systems and the European Train Control System, meeting European safety and interoperability standards. A modern passenger information system will provide real-time updates through displays and automated announcements.
The contract also includes a full-service maintenance package for 15 years, extendable by another 15 years. Maintenance will be carried out locally in Romania, including at a dedicated depot in Bucharest, supported by Railigent X digital systems for optimized fleet management.
This end-to-end service covers preventive and corrective maintenance, overhauls, and material supply, ensuring high availability and reliability of operations.
By replacing diesel-powered trains, the hydrogen fleet is expected to significantly reduce emissions and noise, supporting Romania’s long-term sustainability goals.
