NTPC Ltd has terminated a ₹413.37 crore contract awarded to G R Infraprojects Ltd (GRIL) for a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project at the Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra.
The state-owned power generator said the contract was terminated after GRIL failed to meet its contractual obligations and achieve the required progress on the project.
The contract was awarded in March 2026, with the project scheduled for completion within 15 months in line with national energy objectives. NTPC said the project experienced significant delays in critical activities.
“A contractual notice was issued to GRIL calling for immediate corrective action, but GRIL failed to undertake the required remedial measures. Accordingly, NTPC has terminated the contract with immediate effect and, in line with contractual provisions, has encashed available securities amounting to approximately ₹91 crore,” NTPC said in a statement.
The project is intended to strengthen grid flexibility and support renewable energy integration. NTPC has initiated the process to re-tender the project at the risk and cost of GRIL, in accordance with the applicable contractual provisions.
The company is also taking measures to facilitate the early re-award and timely implementation of the project.
The Mouda BESS project forms part of NTPC’s wider efforts to deploy battery energy storage alongside its conventional power generation assets.
NTPC is pursuing BESS projects across multiple locations as energy storage becomes increasingly important for balancing India’s growing renewable power capacity.
The company has an installed capacity of more than 91 GW and is targeting 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. NTPC is also investing in emerging areas including nuclear power, battery energy storage, carbon capture and green chemicals.
