Microsoft announces end of support for Office 2021 as focus shifts to newer services

Microsoft has announced that support for Office 2021 will come to an end, marking the conclusion of updates and security support for the productivity suite. The move means users relying on the standalone version will eventually need to consider newer alternatives to continue receiving protection and feature improvements.

The company said Office 2021 users will no longer receive security patches, bug fixes or technical support after the support period ends. While the applications will continue to function, systems running the software could become more vulnerable to security risks over time.

Office 2021 was introduced as a one-time purchase option for users who preferred a traditional software model over subscription-based services. However, Microsoft has increasingly shifted its focus toward Microsoft 365, which offers regular updates, cloud integration and access to new features.

The end of support applies to applications included in Office 2021, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Users and organisations that continue using the software after support ends will not receive protection against newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Microsoft has advised customers to explore upgrade options to ensure continued security and access to the latest tools. Businesses and individual users are expected to evaluate migration plans as the support deadline approaches.

The announcement reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy of moving customers toward cloud-based services and subscription offerings while maintaining a more streamlined software ecosystem.
