In a sweeping internal overhaul tied to artificial intelligence integration, Meta has outlined plans for major global workforce reductions alongside structural changes aimed at reshaping how the company operates around AI-driven workflows.
The company informed employees in a Monday memo that it will cut 10 percent of its workforce on Wednesday, with additional layoffs expected later this year, according to a global news agency report. Meta is also restructuring teams to prioritize AI-based operations and efficiency.
Meta Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said in the memo that around 7,000 employees will be shifted to new AI-focused initiatives, while several managerial roles will be eliminated. She also noted that “many leaders will announce org changes,” adding that new structures are being designed around “AI native design principles” to enable flatter teams and faster execution.
“As org leaders worked on the changes, many of them incorporated AI native design principles into their new org structures. We’re now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership.”
The company said the overall layoffs and internal transfers will impact about 20 percent of its total workforce. Some transfers have already taken place, while remaining changes will be communicated on Wednesday. Employees in North America have been instructed to work from home on that day. Meta has also shut down 6,000 open roles as part of the restructuring. The company’s headcount stood at 77,986 employees at the end of March, as per filings.
New internal groups such as Applied AI Engineering (AAI), Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA) XFN, Central Analytics, and Enterprise Solutions are central to the restructuring. These teams will focus on building AI agents capable of performing tasks currently handled by employees, along with measuring productivity and supporting enterprise AI deployment.
However, the transition has triggered internal backlash. More than 1,000 employees have signed a petition opposing the use of mouse-tracking software intended for AI training. Employees have also criticized leadership for delays in addressing layoff concerns and privacy issues on internal platforms. Reports also indicate symbolic protests within offices, including images of elephants referencing the “elephant in the room” regarding layoffs.
Meta declined to comment on the plan.
