As festive shopping and online promotions increase during Diwali, cybercriminals are using fake gift and discount offers to trick people into sharing sensitive information. Meerut Police have issued an alert about fraudulent links circulating through WhatsApp, SMS and social media.
How the festive scams operate
Fraudsters are reportedly sending messages that promise free gifts, special discounts and expensive prizes through lucky draws. These messages often use the names of well-known companies to make the offers appear genuine.
Recipients are directed to fake websites where they may be asked to register, pay delivery charges or share a one-time password (OTP) to claim a reward. Police warned that clicking these links or submitting personal details could expose banking information to criminals.
Once they obtain sensitive data, fraudsters may attempt to access victims’ bank accounts and withdraw money. Complaints about such festive scams have reportedly reached the cybercrime police station, prompting authorities to begin a public awareness campaign.
Safety measures recommended by police
Meerut Police have advised residents not to open suspicious links received through messaging apps or social media. They have also warned people never to disclose OTPs, ATM PINs, CVV numbers or other banking credentials to claim promotional rewards.
Residents should verify festive offers directly through the official websites of the companies named in the messages. Police have urged people to check the authenticity of prize announcements and free gift claims, especially when they involve requests for personal or financial information.
Where to report cyber fraud
Anyone who suspects they have lost money to online fraud should immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930. Complaints can also be filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
Authorities have stressed that careful verification of online promotions and public awareness are important to preventing financial losses during the festive season.
