LinkedIn explores paid AI training roles as demand for human expertise rises

In a move reflecting the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, LinkedIn has started testing an “AI labor marketplace” where professionals can earn by helping improve AI systems.

The Microsoft-owned platform is exploring a model where experts from fields like coding, finance, and nursing contribute to training AI. These roles are gaining traction quickly, with LinkedIn noting that such jobs are among the fastest-growing in the US.

The process of AI training is based on human input rather than complex technical work. Trainers interact with AI chatbots, review their responses, rate accuracy, and challenge them with difficult questions. This feedback helps make AI systems more reliable and effective.

The earning potential in this space is significant. Professionals can earn between $40 (₹3,700) and $150 (₹14,000) per hour, depending on their expertise. For instance, individuals skilled in Excel and finance can earn up to $100 (₹9,300) per hour. Senior software engineers, who handle advanced coding-related AI training, are among the highest earners, with rates reaching $150 per hour.

LinkedIn’s entry comes at a time when competition in this segment is intensifying. Several startups are already connecting AI companies with human trainers. Mercor has seen its valuation rise sharply to $10 billion within a year. Surge AI, known for its data annotation marketplace, is reportedly valued at $24 billion. Scale AI is also actively working with leading AI labs to enhance models using human feedback.

This development highlights the growing importance of human expertise in shaping AI systems, even as automation continues to expand.
