India Post and Skye Air roll out drone mail delivery across 150 routes

India Post is introducing drone-based mail delivery across difficult and remote areas, partnering with Skye Air Mobility to improve postal connectivity where challenging terrain and bad weather can disrupt road transport.

The initiative will cover 150 routes, connecting 110 locations in Himachal Pradesh and 40 in Assam. The service has already started on the Mandi to Rehardhar route in Himachal Pradesh.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the route, which earlier took hours to cover through difficult terrain, can now be completed in just 7 minutes using drones with real-time tracking.

The drones can carry loads of up to 10 kg and operate in temperatures ranging from −10°C to 50°C. They can cover distances from 5 km to more than 80 km, potentially reducing delivery times from hours to minutes.

Skye Air CEO Ankit Kumar said drone flights from Mandi began within 72 hours of the contract being signed.

Scindia said the initiative was developed based on feedback from Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, highlighting the need for faster and more reliable postal services in challenging regions.
