Pune man loses ₹22 lakh after fraudsters use fake jail photo of ‘American friend’

A cyber fraud involving a fabricated story and a misleading photograph has left a Pune resident poorer by ₹22 lakh. The victim was allegedly duped after being convinced that his online American friend had been detained in Delhi and urgently needed financial help.

According to police, the fraudsters used a photograph purportedly showing the woman in jail to make the story appear genuine. Believing that his friend was facing legal trouble and required immediate assistance, the man transferred ₹22 lakh over multiple transactions.

The accused reportedly maintained regular communication with the victim and created a sense of urgency to extract money. The photograph allegedly played a key role in convincing him that the claims were genuine.

It was only after repeated requests for money and growing suspicions that the victim realised he had been cheated and approached the police. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to trace those involved in the fraud.

Officials have warned citizens against trusting unknown individuals met online and advised people to verify claims independently before transferring money. They also urged users to be cautious of emotional manipulation tactics, which are increasingly being used by cybercriminals to target victims.

Cyber experts say such scams often rely on fake identities, fabricated emergencies and manipulated images to gain trust. They recommend avoiding financial transactions based solely on online interactions and reporting suspicious activities immediately.

The incident highlights the growing sophistication of social engineering scams, where fraudsters exploit emotions and personal relationships to deceive victims and steal money.
