A brief response from Elon Musk has reignited discussion around the future of data infrastructure, as the concept of space-based data centres gains traction among global tech leaders.
Musk reacted to a post on X (formerly Twitter) referencing comments by Sundar Pichai on the future of data centres. The post, shared by Peter H. Diamandis, suggested that data centres in space could become “the new normal” within a decade. Musk responded with a single word: “true”.
The original post stated: “Sundar Pichai just said data centers in space will be “the new normal” within a decade. @elonmusk has been saying this for years”. It further added: “When the CEO of Google starts agreeing with Elon, pay attention. The orbital compute era is closer than you think.”
While Pichai has not publicly confirmed a specific timeline in the same context, the idea of space-based computing is gaining visibility as demand for data processing continues to rise.
The concept involves placing computing infrastructure in orbit instead of on Earth. These systems could potentially use solar energy directly and reduce reliance on land-based facilities. Supporters believe this approach could help address key challenges such as energy consumption and cooling, which are major constraints for traditional data centres.
However, the concept remains in early stages and would require significant advancements in technology, cost efficiency and infrastructure to become viable at scale.
This is not the first time Musk has responded to discussions around the idea. In an earlier interview with Fox News, Pichai said that Google is exploring quantum computing and added, “in that spirit, one of our moon shots is to, how do we one day have data centers in space so that we can better harness the energy from the sun”.
He further noted that the company aims to “put these data centers in space closer to the sun”, with a potential “first step in 2027”. At the time, Musk had responded to the development by commenting “Interesting”.
Musk has long spoken about leveraging space for large-scale infrastructure. His company, SpaceX, has already launched thousands of satellites through its Starlink project, highlighting ongoing efforts to expand space-based connectivity and systems.
