ASML partnership strengthens India’s vision of becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Netherlands has highlighted India’s growing semiconductor ambitions, with Dutch technology company ASML emerging as a key partner in the country’s long-term chip manufacturing strategy.

ASML, based in Veldhoven, is globally known for its advanced lithography machines that are critical for producing modern semiconductor chips. The company’s technology is considered essential for advanced chip manufacturing worldwide.

During the visit, discussions focused on semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, AI, clean technologies, and strengthening India’s domestic chip ecosystem.

One of the major developments was the agreement between Tata Electronics and ASML to support India’s first front-end semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Tata Electronics is developing the facility with an estimated investment of nearly $11 billion. The plant is expected to manufacture semiconductor chips for automotive, mobile devices, and AI-driven applications.

Industry experts believe ASML’s involvement is highly significant because access to advanced lithography systems is crucial for India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions. The partnership is also seen as an important step in building stronger long-term collaborations with global semiconductor technology leaders.

During meetings with Dutch government officials and business leaders, Modi encouraged companies from the Netherlands to invest in semiconductors, digital technologies, renewable energy, healthcare, and resilient supply chains.

India and the Netherlands also upgraded their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, signalling deeper cooperation in innovation, sustainability, technology, and semiconductor manufacturing.

India’s semiconductor expansion comes as the country continues investing heavily in infrastructure, incentives, and manufacturing support to reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic electronics production. Multiple semiconductor and electronics manufacturing projects are currently being developed across India.

Technology experts believe the growing India-Netherlands partnership could play a major role in positioning India as an emerging global semiconductor and advanced technology hub.
