Android 17 Beta hints at new Photo Shuffle wallpaper feature for Pixel phones

A new feature discovered in the latest Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5 suggests Google could soon make wallpaper personalisation more dynamic for Pixel users. An APK teardown indicates that the company is working on a built-in wallpaper shuffle option that can automatically rotate selected photos as wallpapers.

The feature, called Photo Shuffle, was spotted within the Wallpaper & Style app in Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5. It is expected to let users create an album of their favourite people and pets, with wallpapers changing automatically at different intervals.

According to the report, users may be able to refresh wallpapers every hour, every day, at sunrise or sunset, or simply by tapping the screen. The feature appears to closely resemble Apple’s Photo Shuffle option available on iPhones.

Screenshots from the APK teardown also suggest that users could either create a new album or select an existing one for automatic wallpaper rotation. The feature is designed to offer a more personalised lock screen and home screen experience without relying on third-party apps.

As this information comes from an APK teardown, the feature is still under development and has not been officially announced by Google. APK teardowns often reveal features that are being tested internally, but there is no guarantee they will be included in a future public release.

Google has not confirmed when or if the Photo Shuffle feature will become available. More details are expected as Android 17 QPR1 development continues and future beta versions are released.
