Artificial intelligence coding tools are becoming more mobile-focused as OpenAI brings its agentic coding assistant, Codex, to the ChatGPT mobile app. The rollout comes as competition in the AI developer tools market continues to grow, especially with rising momentum around rival AI models in the coding space.
OpenAI said Codex on mobile is designed to help users manage and monitor development workflows directly from their smartphones. The feature allows users to review coding tasks running across laptops, remote environments, and development systems without needing to stay at their desks.
According to the company, users can answer questions, review outputs, approve commands, change directions during active tasks, and introduce new instructions while work continues in the background.
“As Codex handles work over longer stretches, timely guidance becomes a bigger part of keeping that work useful,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
“From your phone, you can start work when it is top of mind, unblock it when your judgment is needed, and stay close to the result as it takes shape,” the company added.
OpenAI also clarified that Codex on mobile is not simply a remote-control companion. The company describes it as a full-featured mobile coding experience where users can switch between multiple coding threads, review outputs, approve actions, change AI models, and launch entirely new development tasks.
The company said files, credentials, permissions, and local system setups remain stored on the original machine running Codex. Meanwhile, updates such as screenshots, terminal outputs, code diffs, test results, and approval requests are streamed back to the mobile app in real time.
Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app is now rolling out in preview on both iPhone and Android devices across all plans, including Free and Go, in supported regions. OpenAI said users can access the feature by updating both the ChatGPT mobile app and the Codex app on macOS. Support for Windows connectivity is expected to arrive later.
Last month, OpenAI also expanded Codex into a broader AI workspace capable of accessing apps, operating systems, and completing tasks with limited human involvement. The update came shortly after another major AI model launch in the developer AI market, highlighting the growing competition in AI-powered coding platforms.
