Artificial intelligence company Anthropic and the Gates Foundation have announced a $200 million commitment to support AI-driven public good initiatives in sectors such as health and education over the next 4 years.
The partnership aims to expand the positive impact of AI technology while addressing concerns around inequality, job displacement, and limited access to advanced digital tools.
According to officials, Anthropic’s contribution will include support from its technical teams and usage credits for its Claude AI platform. The Gates Foundation, co-founded by Bill Gates, will provide grant funding, programme design, and sector expertise.
The announcement comes months after the Gates Foundation and OpenAI introduced a separate $50 million initiative in January to support 1,000 African clinics and communities with AI by 2028.
One of the major focus areas of the new partnership is language accessibility. AI systems currently struggle with writing and translating many African languages. Janet Zhou, a director at the Gates Foundation, said the organisations plan to improve public data collection and language labeling to help strengthen AI models across the industry.
The partnership is also exploring the release of knowledge graphs that could help AI systems better support teachers in sub-Saharan Africa and India.
Zhou said the focus on public goods comes from “the needs of different partners and governments, including some of the fears that they may have around proprietary lock-in and sovereignty.”
Another initiative under the collaboration will help research centers use Claude AI to identify drug candidates for HPV and preeclampsia. These diseases have received limited research attention from pharmaceutical companies due to lower commercial interest.
Anthropic, which is backed by Google and Amazon, said the initiative aligns closely with its broader mission.
“This announcement is really core to who we are as a company,” said Elizabeth Kelly, who leads Anthropic’s beneficial deployments team.
