Google is enhancing its Photos app with a new AI-driven feature that aims to change how users manage and style their clothing. The update will turn existing photo libraries into a digital wardrobe, making it easier to organise outfits and experiment with looks.

The feature uses AI to scan images stored in Google Photos, identify clothing items worn by users, and group them into a dedicated “wardrobe” collection. This removes the need for manual uploads or tagging, as the system automatically builds a visual inventory from past photos. It can also bring back forgotten outfits or rarely used pieces.

Once the wardrobe is created, users can organise it using filters. Items can be sorted into categories such as tops, bottoms, or accessories like jewellery. This provides a structured view, similar to browsing sections in a retail app, but based entirely on the user’s own collection.

The update also introduces outfit planning tools. Users can mix and match clothing items from their digital wardrobe to create different looks. These combinations can be saved as moodboards and organised by themes like travel, workwear, or events such as weddings. Users will also be able to share these outfit ideas with friends.

Another key feature is virtual try-on. This allows users to preview how selected outfit combinations might look on them before actually wearing them. It can help with planning daily outfits or deciding what to pack for trips.

Google said the feature will roll out in phases, starting this summer on Android devices, followed by iOS at a later stage.
