NASA astronauts capture Cygnus XL spacecraft as ISS resupply mission reaches key milestone

In a key milestone for the latest resupply mission, the International Space Station’s robotic arm successfully captured a cargo spacecraft delivering critical supplies and scientific payloads.

At 1:20 p.m. EDT, NASA astronaut Chris Williams, with assistance from Jack Hathaway, used the Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL spacecraft.

Mission Control at NASA’s Johnson Space Center will now use Canadarm2 to position the spacecraft for installation. The spacecraft will then be guided to the Unity module’s Earth-facing port. NASA will not provide live coverage of the installation process.

The mission is part of Northrop Grumman’s Commercial Resupply Services 24 programme. It launched at 7:41 a.m. on April 11 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The Cygnus XL spacecraft is carrying more than 11,000 pounds of scientific research and cargo to support operations aboard the orbiting laboratory.

Northrop Grumman has named this spacecraft the S.S. Steven R. Nagel, honouring Steven R. Nagel, who flew 4 space shuttle missions and logged over 720 hours in space.
