Cyber fraud crackdown intensifies as ₹22 lakh recovered in Kashmir

In a major push against online fraud, the Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence (CICE) of the Crime Branch Kashmir has recovered more than ₹22 lakh in cyber fraud cases over the past 3 months.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, CICE, Ashiq Hussain Malik said the recovery reflects both the scale of cybercrime and the growing efforts to tackle it. Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, he added that a significant portion of the defrauded money has been put on hold and is being processed for return to victims.

At the same time, Malik cautioned that large amounts are still being lost due to lack of public awareness. He explained that cybercriminals are constantly changing their tactics, targeting people of all age groups through fake job offers, lottery scams, investment frauds, and impersonation calls. “Whenever an offer looks too attractive, it should raise suspicion. Verification is essential before making any financial transaction,” he said.

He also highlighted the rising use of advanced technologies by fraudsters, including AI-based voice and video cloning, to trick victims. Citizens were advised to verify any request for money, even if it appears to come from someone they know.

Addressing another growing concern, Malik clarified that “digital arrest” is a scam with no legal basis. He warned people, especially senior citizens, not to fall for such threats.

Victims of cyber fraud were urged to immediately call the national helpline 1930 or report incidents on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Prompt action, he noted, can help authorities freeze fraudulent transactions in real time and limit financial loss.

Reinforcing the need for vigilance, Malik urged the public to avoid sharing sensitive information, stay alert, and report suspicious activities to law enforcement to curb the rising threat of cybercrime.
