A major cybersecurity incident has come to light as European fitness chain Basic-Fit confirmed unauthorized access to one of its internal systems, potentially impacting nearly 1 million members across multiple countries.
The company said the breach involved a centralized system used to track member visits to its clubs. Around 200,000 users in the Netherlands are among those affected, with the total impact extending across 6 European countries.
The breach was detected through internal monitoring systems, which flagged suspicious activity and stopped the unauthorized access within minutes. Basic-Fit informed the relevant data protection authority as required. In its official statement, the company said: “Today, Basic-Fit has notified the relevant data protection authority concerning unauthorized access to the system that records members’ visits to Basic-Fit clubs.” It also confirmed that affected members have been directly notified.
An investigation carried out with external cybersecurity experts revealed that some data was downloaded by the attackers. The compromised information includes membership details, names, addresses, email IDs, phone numbers, dates of birth, and bank account details. However, the company clarified that it does not store ID documents and no passwords were accessed.
The breach is not limited to the Netherlands. Reports suggest the total number of affected users could reach 1 million across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, and Germany. The attack targeted a centralized database, increasing the scale of exposure across multiple markets.
Basic-Fit stated there is currently no evidence that the stolen data has been leaked or misused. It said: “The investigation so far has not shown the data being available anywhere or having been misused.” The company continues to work with external experts to assess the full impact.
Cybersecurity experts warn that even without confirmed misuse, such breaches involving personal and financial data can increase risks of phishing, fraud, and identity theft.
