XChat enters messaging market with strong focus on privacy and security

A new development in the messaging space is drawing attention as a major platform expands into private communication. The launch comes at a time when concerns around data privacy and user security are gaining global focus.

Elon Musk-owned X has introduced a new instant messaging app, XChat, on April 24. The app is currently available for iPhone and iPad users and aims to compete with popular platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

XChat focuses strongly on privacy, offering end-to-end encryption for secure conversations. The platform claims it does not show ads and does not track users. People can quickly set up their account using their existing X login credentials.

At present, XChat supports devices running iOS 26 or later and iPadOS 26 or newer.

The launch comes amid ongoing concerns around WhatsApp’s privacy practices. A recent class action lawsuit in the US alleged that the platform intercepted private messages despite its encryption claims and shared them with third parties, including Accenture. WhatsApp has denied these allegations, calling them “categorically false and absurd.”

Commenting on the issue, Elon Musk said, “Can’t trust WhatsApp. Use X Chat for messaging and voice/video calls. Comes with this great benefit of actual privacy.” Telegram CEO Pavel Durov also criticised WhatsApp, calling its encryption claims “the biggest consumer fraud in history.”

XChat offers several features designed to enhance user control and security. These include message editing and deletion, disappearing messages, group chats, and support for sharing large files like photos, videos, and documents. The app also includes a screenshot blocking feature to further protect user privacy.

Setting up XChat is simple. Users need to log in with their X account, create a security PIN, and grant necessary permissions like contact access. Once completed, they can start messaging and sharing content.

To download XChat on iPhone or iPad:
Open the App Store, search for “XChat,” select the app, tap “Get,” authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or password, and wait for installation.
