As H-1B uncertainty prompts skilled professionals to return home, India’s slowing technology job market is exposing a mismatch between global experience and domestic hiring demand.

For decades, the H-1B visa symbolised opportunity for India’s technology professionals. Today, many are returning because of visa uncertainty and restructuring rather than personal choice. Their homecoming, however, coincides with a more selective hiring environment.

Across the technology sector, organisations are prioritising specialised capabilities over large-scale recruitment. Skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud engineering and advanced analytics are commanding greater attention than conventional technology roles.

International experience continues to be valuable, but employers increasingly evaluate candidates on measurable business impact rather than overseas credentials alone. The hiring conversation has shifted from where professionals have worked to what they can build and lead.

India’s growing Global Capability Centre ecosystem offers promising opportunities. As GCCs expand their mandates into product engineering, research and AI-led innovation, they are creating roles that align with globally experienced professionals—although hiring remains highly competitive.

Compensation expectations also require recalibration. Salary benchmarks shaped by the US market often differ from what Indian employers are prepared to offer, making flexibility an important factor in successful transitions.

The broader lesson is that India’s technology ecosystem has matured. Reverse brain drain can strengthen innovation, but only if returning talent aligns with evolving industry needs. The opportunity remains significant, yet success will increasingly depend on specialised skills, adaptability and long-term value creation.
