A new WhatsApp feature could make conversations look more consistent by allowing users to share their customised chat themes with other participants. The feature may sync themes, wallpapers and chat bubble colours across individual and group chats.
The option was spotted in WhatsApp for iOS 26.37.10.16 through TestFlight and is still under development. WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will be available to users more widely.
Users may be able to choose whether a selected theme stays visible only to them or is shared with others in the conversation. If a theme is shared, participants could automatically see the same wallpaper and chat bubble colour.
The feature may also support custom wallpapers selected from a user’s phone photo library. This would allow users to share their own images instead of relying only on WhatsApp’s predefined designs.
The option could also work in group chats, allowing participants to see the same wallpaper and bubble colour. However, users who receive a synchronised theme may still be able to change their chat appearance later.
WhatsApp could also display a system message in the conversation whenever a shared theme is changed. The message may identify the person who made the change.
The shared themes and custom wallpapers are expected to be protected by end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp would reportedly not be able to view the themes or wallpapers selected and shared by users.
Separately, WhatsApp is also testing a redesigned chat theme experience on Android. The new interface is expected to include 5 theme categories along with separate wallpaper options.
