WhatsApp is reportedly working on a major upgrade to its two-step verification feature by replacing the existing 6-digit PIN with a stronger password-based system. The new security feature is expected to provide users with better protection for their accounts by allowing passwords that include both letters and numbers.
The reported update aims to strengthen account security, especially for users who use WhatsApp for financial transactions or share sensitive information through the platform. Unlike the current numeric PIN, a password-based system could offer greater resistance against unauthorised access.
According to reports, the feature will remain optional, similar to the existing two-step verification setting. Users who do not enable two-step verification are not expected to be affected if the feature is introduced. The password option is currently in the early stages of development and is not yet available for beta testing. The company could also modify or cancel the feature before its official release.
At present, users can manage WhatsApp’s two-step verification by opening Settings, selecting Account, and then choosing Two-step verification. From there, they can enable or disable the feature, change their PIN, or update the email address linked to account recovery.
WhatsApp is also reportedly working on several additional features. Recent reports suggest the platform has started rolling out username support in both the stable and beta versions of its Android and iOS apps for some users. Another reported addition is a shortcut in WhatsApp for iOS version 26.27.74, allowing users to switch between Apple’s microphone modes more easily during voice calls.
Although WhatsApp has not officially announced these features, the reported updates indicate the platform is continuing to enhance both security and user experience.
