Google adds selfie video authentication to improve account recovery

Google has introduced a new Selfie Video feature to make Google Account sign-in and recovery more secure and convenient. The new verification method allows users to confirm their identity with a short selfie video if they are unable to access their account through their usual device.

The feature can be enabled by opening the Security and Sign-in section in Google Account settings and selecting Selfie Video. During setup, users are asked to look at their device’s camera and complete a few guided head movements to capture multiple angles of their face.

According to Google, the recorded selfie video is securely encrypted and will only be used for identity verification during sign-in and account recovery. If users are locked out of their account in the future, they can record a new selfie video. Google will compare the new recording with the previously enrolled video to verify the user’s identity.

The company said the verification process uses an AI model to confirm that the user is a real person and is old enough to access certain Google services. Users may also be asked to perform simple head movements during verification to confirm they are physically present.

Google stated that users have complete control over their selfie videos. The recordings are stored securely in the Security Settings section of the Google Account with the user’s consent and can be deleted at any time. The company also said it continues to use additional security measures to detect and prevent suspicious sign-in attempts.

The new Selfie Video feature is designed to provide an extra layer of security while making account recovery simpler for users who no longer have access to their usual phone or computer.
