WhatsApp could be preparing another visual update for its Android app, with a redesigned bottom navigation bar that gives the interface a more modern and separated look.
According to a feature tracker, the Meta-owned messaging platform is testing a new bottom navigation bar with rounded corners and a floating layout. If introduced, the bar would sit separately from the main interface instead of blending into the bottom section of the screen.
The redesigned interface is reportedly being tested with WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.38.10, available through the Google Play Store.
The new navigation bar is said to be visible in both light and dark themes, although the change appears more noticeable when the light theme is enabled. The floating design and rounded edges are also said to draw inspiration from the Liquid Glass design language recently introduced for WhatsApp on iOS.
However, WhatsApp may not bring the same translucent appearance to Android, as the 2 operating systems follow different design guidelines.
The change is also reportedly linked to feedback from Android users seeking a more modern WhatsApp interface, with some users calling for a broader redesign.
The redesigned navigation bar is still under development and has not yet been enabled for beta testers. It is expected to reach select beta users first before a wider rollout in a future update. As with other beta features, availability may vary during the phased rollout.
