Several WhatsApp users, including those in India, faced an unexpected disruption on Monday after their accounts were placed “under review” for 24 hours. The messaging platform also restricted access to its features, leading users to report the issue on social media.
A news agency reported that WhatsApp had placed multiple accounts under review. The company said the action was part of its efforts to prevent misuse of the platform.
“We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said.
Users began noticing the issue around 8 pm IST. The disruption occurred without any prior warning from the Meta-owned messaging platform.
Affected users saw a message stating: “Account in review. Date requested: 3 Aug 2026. Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our terms of service. We will notify you of the result typically within 24 hours.”
The screen also provided information about account-related issues, including “How to use WhatsApp responsibly. See guidance” and “About stolen phone and accounts”.
Several users shared screenshots of the problem. One user wrote on social media: “My WhatsApp account has been disabled without any explanation. I have already submitted an appeal, but the review page only displays a generic message stating that it will “typically” be reviewed within 24 hours. Help me urgently,”
Another user on X posted, “My WhatsApp account was suddenly disabled without any warning. I only use the official app, and my work depends on WhatsApp. Please help. This was so unnecessary.”
