Concerns over Google’s changing free storage policies are prompting some users to explore alternative ways to store their photos without paying for additional cloud subscriptions.

Reports suggest that some newly created Google accounts may receive only 5GB of free storage by default, with the full 15GB becoming available after linking a phone number. The change has sparked discussions around cloud storage dependency and long-term costs for users.

For many users, photos and videos account for the largest share of storage consumption, often far exceeding the space used by emails, documents, device backups, and other files. As a result, finding an alternative destination for media files has become a practical way to avoid recurring storage expenses.

One increasingly popular option is self-hosted storage using a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system. Unlike traditional cloud services, NAS devices allow users to store photos and videos on hardware they own while maintaining automatic backup capabilities. This approach provides greater control over data and eliminates monthly subscription fees.

The discussion comes as cloud storage providers continue to balance free offerings with growing demand for digital storage. While Google’s storage allocation remains shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, users seeking to preserve free space are increasingly looking at independent backup solutions and personal storage infrastructure.

The trend reflects a broader shift toward data ownership, with consumers evaluating whether subscription-based cloud services or self-managed storage solutions better suit their long-term needs.
