The United Kingdom has strengthened its commitment to AI by appointing Indian-origin Labour MP Kanishka Narayan as the country’s first Cabinet-level Minister for Artificial Intelligence. The newly created position places AI at the centre of government policymaking, reflecting its growing importance to the UK’s economic, technological and national priorities.
Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Narayan moved to Cardiff, Wales, with his family at the age of 12. He later studied at the University of Oxford before earning an MBA from Stanford University. Prior to entering politics, he built a career across public policy, the civil service and the private sector, focusing on economic development, innovation and technology.
Narayan was elected as the Member of Parliament for Vale of Glamorgan in 2024, becoming Wales’ first ethnic minority MP. He later served as Minister for AI and Online Safety, where he worked on issues surrounding artificial intelligence, digital regulation and online safety. His promotion to a Cabinet-level role marks a significant expansion of those responsibilities.
The creation of a dedicated Cabinet portfolio for AI signals a shift in how the UK views the technology. Rather than being treated solely as a digital or innovation agenda, artificial intelligence is now positioned as a strategic national priority that will influence decisions across economic policy, public services, industrial growth, cybersecurity and global competitiveness.
