Truecaller has announced layoffs affecting 70 employees, nearly 15% of its workforce, following a difficult start to 2026. The caller identification platform reported a major slowdown in business performance, with net sales declining by 27%.
India, the company’s largest market, witnessed the biggest impact. Sales in the country dropped by 41%, while overall advertising revenue fell by 44%. The downturn comes as the company faces multiple market challenges across regions.
CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said the decline was driven by India’s ban on real-money gaming apps, ongoing instability in the Middle East, and changes introduced by advertising partners such as Google.
Despite the weak financial performance, Truecaller saw growth in its subscription business. Subscription revenue increased by 27% and now contributes nearly one-third of the company’s total sales.
To strengthen user engagement and reduce dependence on advertising, the company is focusing more on paid offerings, including AI Assistant and Family Protection features. The move also comes as telecom companies continue to expand their presence in the caller identification and spam protection space, increasing competition for the platform.
