Spotify introduces AI-powered conversational assistant for personalised music discovery

Spotify has introduced a new AI-powered conversational assistant designed to make music, podcast and audiobook discovery more interactive. The feature offers a ChatGPT-like experience, allowing users to communicate with Spotify using natural language to find and manage content without leaving the app.

The new AI assistant is currently rolling out in beta for eligible Spotify Premium subscribers. Users will see new AI entry points on the Home screen and the Now Playing interface, where they can interact with the assistant through voice by tapping the microphone button or by typing prompts directly into the app. The feature is optional, and users can continue using Spotify in its traditional way if they prefer.

One of the key features of the assistant is personalised music discovery. Users can ask Spotify to recommend artists they have not listened to before, create playlists based on their mood, make playlists more upbeat, add songs from a specific artist, filter recommendations to recent releases, save tracks automatically, add songs to the playback queue or follow artists. The assistant also supports follow-up prompts, allowing users to refine recommendations through ongoing conversations.

Spotify’s AI assistant can also answer questions about the music users are listening to. It can provide information about an artist’s inspiration, album release dates, genres and other background details. Based on these conversations, it can recommend similar artists and related music.

For podcasts and audiobooks, users can ask questions about authors, guests, books or discussion topics. The assistant can identify other books written by an author and recommend podcasts featuring a specific guest.

The AI assistant also uses a subscriber’s listening history to deliver personalised insights. Users can ask when they first listened to a song, which genres they have explored recently or how their listening habits have changed over time.

Spotify said the feature is currently available in beta for Premium subscribers aged 18 and above in Ireland, Sweden and the US. It supports English and is available on both Android and iOS devices.
