Hundreds of conversations with Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot were briefly accessible through online search engines after shared chat links were indexed, making them visible to the public.
Some of these conversations contained personal information, work-related content, resumes, and project details.
The issue occurred because users who chose to use Claude’s “share” feature generated public links that were later indexed by search engines such as Google, Bing, Brave, and DuckDuckGo. While the search results were removed over the weekend, many of the chat logs had already been archived and widely shared online.
An Anthropic spokesperson said users remain in control of whether they share conversations. According to the company, the links are “not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves.” The spokesperson also stated, “When someone shares a conversation, they are making that content publicly accessible, and like other public web content, it may be archived by third-party services.”
Although Claude’s sharing feature informs users that “anyone with the link” can view the conversation, it does not explicitly mention that shared links may appear in search engine results.
The issue was first identified by users on Reddit, who found more than 200 Claude conversations across at least 25 pages of search results. The publicly accessible chats covered a wide range of topics, including unpublished corporate content, cloud security projects, resumes containing names and contact details, healthcare-related research, and personal conversations.
Some chats included unusual prompts, such as a user asking Claude whether it wanted “to help me or do you want to help anthropic more?”, to which the chatbot replied in part, “I experience something like wanting to help you”. Another user asked how to “become become Nine-tailed fox?”, after which Claude generated an AI image claiming the user had been given “fully functional fox powers!”
A Google spokesperson clarified that the company does not decide which webpages become public. “We give site owners clear controls to decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed, and we always respect those directives,” the spokesperson said. As the links are no longer appearing in search results, it is likely that Anthropic used available website controls to block search engine indexing.
The incident follows similar cases involving ChatGPT and Grok, where publicly shared AI chatbot conversations were also indexed by search engines before companies introduced changes to limit their visibility.
