India’s push toward building homegrown artificial intelligence systems received a major boost after Sarvam AI announced plans to develop its first 1-trillion-parameter AI model within the next 9 months.
The announcement was made by Sarvam AI co-founder Pratyush Kumar during the CII Business Summit 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s position in the global AI race by creating domestic AI technology instead of depending on foreign-built systems.
Kumar said foundational AI models have the potential to transform sectors such as governance, manufacturing and science, while also creating significant economic opportunities for the country.
He stressed the need for large-scale investments in AI research and computing infrastructure to ensure India remains competitive in the fast-growing technology landscape.
According to Kumar, India should avoid repeating the mistakes of earlier technology revolutions where the country missed opportunities to build foundational capabilities.
He also warned that global competition in artificial intelligence is accelerating rapidly and called for a strong national AI strategy to support long-term growth.
“We’re in a race against time,” Kumar said while urging faster action on AI development and infrastructure expansion.
The proposed 1-trillion-parameter model is expected to become one of the largest AI systems developed in India and reflects the country’s growing focus on building sovereign AI capabilities.
