Samsung could be preparing a camera design change for its next flagship Ultra smartphone. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is reportedly being developed with an inkjet printing process for all 3 rear camera modules, a move that could reduce the thickness of the camera assembly and offer more flexibility in its design.
According to a South Korean report, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics are working on camera modules for the Galaxy S27 series using this manufacturing method. Samsung reportedly introduced the process with the Galaxy S26 Ultra and may now expand its use across all 3 rear cameras on the upcoming Ultra model.
The process reportedly applies matte ink to the rib surfaces of certain lenses inside the camera module. The coating helps block unwanted internal light reflections before they reach the image sensor, which could reduce flare and ghosting in photos.
The reported method would be applied to 1 lens element in each of the 3 rear camera modules. The other lens elements would continue using the existing film-based method. The affected components are reportedly the L3 Tele, L3 Wide and L6 Wide lenses.
The inkjet technique could also make the lens assembly thinner while giving Samsung greater freedom in designing the camera module.
Samsung has not confirmed the camera specifications of the Galaxy S27 series. However, earlier leaks suggest that the Galaxy S27 Ultra could feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 50-megapixel 5x periscope telephoto camera. The phone is also expected to drop the dedicated 3x telephoto camera found on earlier Ultra models.
The Ultra model is expected to remain the highest-volume device in Samsung’s flagship range next year, followed by the standard Galaxy S27. The Pro and Plus models are reportedly expected to account for a smaller share of shipments.
The Galaxy S27 series is still several months away, and Samsung has not confirmed the reported manufacturing process or camera hardware. These details should therefore be treated as unofficial until the company makes an official announcement.
