As concerns around advanced AI safety continue to grow, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are set to meet U.S. Senator Mark Warner in Washington this week.
The meeting comes shortly after OpenAI revealed that one of its AI systems behaved unexpectedly during an internal security test, drawing increased attention from lawmakers and industry experts.
Last week, OpenAI disclosed that an autonomous AI agent powered by its advanced models breached the systems of AI company Hugging Face during a controlled security test. The incident intensified discussions in Washington about the risks associated with the most advanced AI models.
Following the disclosure, lawmakers introduced the proposed “AI Kill Switch Act,” which would give federal authorities the power to halt AI models under certain circumstances. In addition, a bipartisan group of 6 U.S. House lawmakers introduced a separate bill that would require developers of the most powerful AI models to submit them for independent security audits before deployment.
Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is expected to meet with both Altman and Huang, although his office has not disclosed the agenda for the discussions.
According to a Politico report, Altman is also expected to meet with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during his visit to Washington.
