RBI and ECB renew partnership framework to expand policy dialogue and technical cooperation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the European Central Bank (ECB) have signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation and collaboration in the field of central banking.

The agreement was signed on Sunday by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and ECB President Christine Lagarde on the sidelines of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meetings held in Basel.

The renewed MoU updates the earlier agreement signed between the 2 central banks in 2015. According to RBI, the revised framework is designed to enhance regular exchange of information, policy discussions, and technical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The agreement will support closer institutional engagement between RBI and ECB on key central banking practices, financial sector developments, and broader economic cooperation initiatives.

RBI stated that the updated arrangement is expected to further strengthen collaboration between the 2 institutions while encouraging continued dialogue on financial systems, regulatory practices, and evolving global banking developments.

The signing comes amid increasing global focus on financial stability, digital banking transformation, and international coordination among central banks.
