A potential shift in semiconductor manufacturing strategy is underway as Qualcomm evaluates a return to Samsung Electronics for advanced chip production. The move could mark a change from its recent reliance on TSMC for flagship chipsets.
Reports indicate that Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon visited South Korea to meet Samsung executives and discuss manufacturing the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips using Samsung’s 2nm process.
If finalised, the deal would signal Qualcomm’s return to Samsung’s foundry business after several years. The shift is being driven by improvements in Samsung’s manufacturing yields and rising wafer costs at TSMC. Earlier concerns around overheating and performance have reportedly been addressed, restoring confidence in Samsung’s capabilities.
During the visit, Amon also met with executives from SK Hynix to discuss securing memory semiconductor supply, as demand continues to grow due to AI-driven workloads.
Qualcomm had initially moved away from Samsung in 2022, choosing TSMC for better performance in chip manufacturing. However, increasing costs and the need to diversify production appear to be influencing its current strategy.
The next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips are expected to be announced at the annual Snapdragon Summit, likely scheduled between September and October this year. These processors are anticipated to power upcoming flagship smartphones from brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, including models such as Xiaomi 18, OnePlus 16, and Samsung Galaxy S27.
A shift to Samsung’s 2nm process could play a key role in shaping the performance and efficiency of future high-end smartphones.
