As competition in the AI assistant space intensifies, Google is reportedly working on a redesigned interface for its Gemini app on Android. The update aims to improve usability and enhance the overall visual experience, making the app more modern and intuitive for users.
According to a report, the new design was identified during an APK teardown of version 17.16.21 of the Google app. The changes are still under development and have not been officially released, meaning they could be modified or removed before the final rollout.
The updated interface is expected to introduce brighter visuals and a more structured layout. Google may replace the current light blue background with a deeper, more vibrant gradient. In dark mode, the design could shift from a plain black background to a more refined visual style.
The company is also testing simpler and more minimal icons to create a cleaner and less cluttered interface. These updates may extend across standard chats, temporary conversations, and the Gemini Live experience.
For Gemini Live, Google is exploring different background styles for light and dark modes instead of relying mostly on a dark interface. A new animated button may also replace the existing waveform-style animation at the bottom of the screen, drawing inspiration from voice interaction designs seen in apps like ChatGPT.
The sidebar could see a significant redesign as well. It may expand to full screen when opened, compared to the current layout that covers around 80% of the display. Google is also expected to move the account switcher to the bottom section of the sidebar as part of a broader effort to simplify navigation.
Additional updates may include redesigned buttons for starting new chats and sharing conversations, along with overall layout improvements to make the app easier to use.
Since these changes are based on early findings, there is no confirmation on when or if they will be released to users.
