OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT, introducing major improvements in reasoning, personalization, accuracy, and response quality for everyday user interactions.
The latest model replaces GPT-5.3 Instant and is being rolled out to all ChatGPT users. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant delivers more concise and intelligent responses while significantly reducing hallucinations, especially in sensitive areas such as medicine, law, and finance.
OpenAI stated that GPT-5.5 Instant generates 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims compared to GPT-5.3 Instant on high-risk prompts. The company also reported a 37.3% reduction in inaccurate responses during difficult conversations identified by users.
The upgraded model includes improvements in image analysis, STEM-related tasks, and web search integration, allowing it to provide more contextual and useful responses. GPT-5.5 Instant can also better utilize conversation history, uploaded files, and connected Gmail accounts to personalize interactions.
OpenAI said the model is designed to produce clearer responses with fewer unnecessary words while maintaining a more natural conversational experience. The company has also introduced new “memory sources” controls, enabling users to review, manage, or remove personalization context used by the system.
Benchmark testing showed strong gains over the previous model, including improvements in mathematical reasoning, multimodal understanding, and logical problem-solving capabilities.
The launch follows OpenAI’s broader GPT-5.5 rollout announced in April 2026, which introduced upgraded features for coding, research, and advanced workflows.
OpenAI also confirmed that GPT-5.3 Instant will continue to remain available for paid users for the next 3 months before being phased out completely.
